Chekhov came into Saint Petersburg more than once since 1885. He mostly stayed at home of A.S. Suvorin, the publisher of the newspaper “The New Time” (6 Ertyelev Lane (now Chekhov Street)). Chekhov kept in business contacts with the publisher A.F. Marx. Chekhov’s impressions concerning Saint Petersburg were reflected in his letters to M.P. Chekhov, N.A. Leykin, M.V. Kiselyeva, M.P. Chekhova and others. Chekhov’s works were published in the Petersburg magazines and newspapers (“The Dragonfly”, “Fragments”, “The Petersburg Newspaper”, “The New Time”, “The Northern Bulletin”) under the different pseudonyms since 1880. Collected stories “Stories” (1888), “Children” (1889), “Gloomy People” (1890) were issued in Saint Petersburg. The drama “Ivanov”, the one-act joke plays “The Bear” and “Suggestion” (all of them were staged in 1889), the play “The Seagal” (1896; Chekhov was present at rehearsals and premiere of the performance which failed) were staged at the Aleksandriysky Theatre. In 1901 at a concert tour in Saint Petersburg the Moscow Art Theatre showed the performance “Three Sisters” which had success. Chekhov visited St. Petersburg last time in 1903. He was trained at the Academy of Arts (1892-96, 1900-02) under P. P. Chistyakov and I. E. Repin and at the school of A. Azbe in Munich (1896-1900). In 1892-1918, he lived in St. Petersburg. From 1907, he lived at Tsarskoe Selo, at 35 Konyushennaya Street. From 1920, he lived in Moscow. He was a graphic realist artist, he illustrated Russian classics: Kashtanka by A. P. Chekhov (1903), Woe from Wit by A. S. Griboedov (1907-12), The Inspector General (1922-33), Nevsky Prospect (1904) by N. V. Gogol etc.; the theme of his paintings and drawings was history (On Senate Square, The Water-Colour, 1927). In 1904-17, he was an initiator and permanent head of the New Society of Artists. He taught at the Academy of Arts (in 1903-07, was an assistant at the workshop of Repin in 1907-18, and in 1920-22 he was in charge of the workshop; from 1907 he was a professor, from 1911, he was a full member of the Academy of Arts, from 1915 he was a member of the Council of the Academy of Arts). From 1920 to 1930, he lived in Moscow. In 1933-34 he worked at the Leningrad Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. He proved himself an outstanding teaching-innovator, training many talented artists (B. D. Grigoryev, P. A. Shillingovsky, D. A. Shmarinov, V. I. Shukhaev, A. E. Yakovlev et al.). Mamin-Sibiryak in Tsarskoye Selo. The almshouse, in the memory of the merchants Sinebryukhovs, for girls and aged women began to work in Moskovskaya Street. 14 May. The coronation of Emperor Nicholas I took place in the Dormition Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin. The Palace electric power station was constructed (architect S.A. Danini). The inner electric equipment was installed by the prominent electric-engineer L.R. Shvede who became the first director of the electric power station. The electric power station began to work on 8 November 1898 (its present address is 3 Tserkovnaya Street). A.R. Bach took up the post of the architect of the Palace Board. His appartment was placed in the house at the corner of Leontyevskaya Street and Srednyaya Street. А.R. Bach was buried in the Kuzminsky Cemetery, his grave was restored in 2007 . The autumn. I.F. Annensky, poet and teacher, accepted the offer to take the post as the director of the Tsarskoye Selo Nicholas Man Gymnasium. He received the official appartment at the gymnasium. Nikolai Nikolayevich Punin, the future art historian, literary critic, teacher, had entered the Nicholas Gymnasium. Valentin Krivich, son of Annensky, graduated from the gymnasium.
