In 1896 the plot of the Separated Park on the Kolonists Pond coast, belonged to Princess M.M. Meshcherskaya (nee Princess Dolgorukaya, in the second marriage Berg), was granted by Nicholas II to Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich for building the mansion for his son Boris Vladimirovich. The main house and wing with stable, coach-house and clock tower were built in 1896-1897 for the full age of the prince. It is supposed that the main house was built by the English architects Shernborn and M.X, Beily Scott, as well as the London Trade House “Maples”. The Reserve house (for placing guests, a driver and garage) was built in 1899 to the design of A.I. von Gogen. In 1918 the country house was used for short staying Grand Duke Paul Alexandrovich and his family. Since 1922 the complex belonged to the World-known All-Union Research Institute of Plant Growing according to the choice of the place by scientist – geneticist N.I. Vavilov, the founder and the first director of the institute, who worked here until his arrest. Brother of S.I. Vavilov. Graduated from the Moscow Agricultural Institute in 1911. Since 1921, lived in Petrograd (Leningrad). In 1921-40, headed the Applied and Selective Botany Department of the Agricultural Scientific Committee, reorganized into the All-Union Plant Research Institute in 1930, named after Vavilov in 1967, and located at 44 Bolshaya Morskaya Street (memorial plaque installed), where the Vavilov Museum was opened in 1980. Concurrently, in 1930-40, he was Director of the Genetics Laboratory (today the General Genetics Institute of the Russian Academy of Science, named after Vavilov in 1966). Organised botanical and agricultural expeditions to the Mediterranean countries, Asia, Northern Africa, North America and South America, by which the world's largest collection of cultivated plant-seeds was assembled. Provided a theoretical basis for plant immunity theory (1919), and formulated the law of homology-series in genetic mutation (1920). Advocated genetics in the struggle against the "doctrine" of T.D. Lysenko. President of the Geographical Society of the USSR (1931-40). Awarded the Lenin Prize in 1926. In 1940, Vavilov was repressed without grounds, and died in a prison hospital in Saratov. In 1928-40, lived at 2 Gogol Street (today Malaya Morskaya Street, memorial plaque installed). Nikolay Ivanovich Vavilov, a scientist-geneticist, member of the Academy, the Head of the All-Union Institute of Plant Cultivation, was in charge of the station untill 1940 (the year of his arrest). Vavilov's summer flat was in the house no.27 in Moscow Road, where the memorial plaque was placed on 7 February 2003. The new electric substation, which supplyed the town with electricity in full, was built in Tsarskoye Selo under the leading of the engineer V.A. Lebedev and the team leader R.I. Ilyin. The famous anthology of Russian poets "Tsraskoye Selo v poezii ("Tsarskoye Selo in Poetry") by E.F Gollerbach was issued in the "Parfenon" Pablishing House, his books "Sobraniye Paley v Detskom Sele" ("Paley's Collection in Detskoye Selo"), "Detskoselskiye dvortsi I parki" ("Palaces and Parks of Detskoye Selo") were published in the same year. 20 October. The museum values, which were evacuated to Moscow in September 1917 in connection with the threat of plundering during the Civil War years, were returned from the Great Kremlin Palace to Tsarskoye Selo.
